Short, glittering, and sadder than its parties suggest. Fitzgerald writes the Jazz Age as a beautiful surface over an empty center, and the famous last pages earn their reputation. It is also a novel that rewards a second read: the narrator’s own judgments are shakier than they first appear. At under 200 pages, there is no excuse not to try it.
Verdict: Read it. An afternoon's read that stays with you for years.
