A sweeping history of humankind told through big ideas: shared stories, agriculture’s bargain, empires, money, science. Harari is at his best when he reframes something familiar — money as a shared fiction is the classic example — and the book is full of passages you’ll want to argue about over dinner. Specialists will quibble with some simplifications, and they have a point, but as a doorway into thinking about history, it is unusually effective.
Verdict: Read it if you like big-idea nonfiction. Argue with it; that's part of the fun.
