A man wakes up on a spaceship with no memory and two dead crewmates, and the book makes you feel the problem-solving in real time. Weir’s gift is turning physics homework into a page-turner: every setback has a workaround, every workaround has a cost. The friendship at the center of it is genuinely moving, which is not something you expect from a book this interested in astrophysics.
Verdict: Read it first if you like clever, warm-hearted science fiction. A great gift for the friend who says they don't read sci-fi.
